The Sad Loss of Lt. Greg Martin
Modified By Brian Russell (Host) on 3/26/2008 9:08:57 AM)

With great sadness we mourn the loss of one of our own.  Lt. Greg Martin passed away Tuesday, March 25 enroute to a Doctor's appointment.  Greg set the example for dedication and service to his community over the last 35 years.  His ready smile, quick wit and extraordinary sense of humor were only surpassed by his willingness to dive in and help whomever, whenever he could.  The "Glen" will never be the same without Greg's calm leadership.

Greg served as Fire Chief for some 5 years in the late '70's and early '80's, and as an officer in one capacity or another since then.  Each passing year found Greg serving not only the Fire Department, but the Glen Haven Association Board numerous times as well as doing countless projects for friends and neighbors in need.  His dedication, frienship and involvement was largely responsible for instilling the desire and foresight that has brought continued improvement to the Department over the last 30 years.  Projects too many to list were completed by Greg.  The Fire Department, and indeed the entire community owes him a great debt of gratitude.

Farewell my friend, you will be missed.

Re: The Sad Loss of Lt. Greg Martin

Steve,

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, many of us considered Greg a good friend and it was difficult incident. I am, we are, sorry for your loss and our sympathy goes out to Greg's family, your department and your community. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to assist you i.e. covering your area during Greg's funeral or if you need assistance with his funeral. I am sure Father Gregory, our chaplain would also be available if you or Greg's family would need his services.

Scott,
I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you and your crew for the valiant efforts made yesterday under what had to be very difficult circumstances. Greg Martin was an integral part of our community and his continued involvement with GHAVFD over the last 35 years will be impossible to replace. I know that the close relationship our two organizations have enjoyed over those years has resulted in many friendships, and that Greg was well known and considered a good friend by many Estes Firefighters. Thank you again for your efforts on his behalf, we appreciate it more than you can know.

Be Safe,
Steve Childs, Fire Chief

Re: The Sad Loss of Lt. Greg Martin
Folks,

The following message is distributed at the request of Steve Childs, Fire Chief of the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department (Larimer County):

It is with great sorrow that I inform you of the loss of Lt. Greg Martin this morning.  Greg, a former Chief of Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Dept. and an active member for 35 years, suffered a heart attack this morning enroute to a Doctor's appointment.  His dedication to the Department, quick wit, humor and extraordinary leadership will be forever missed.  Few men like Greg come along in a lifetime, and I'm honored to have known him and served with him.  Semper Fi, Greg...I know when I see those streets of gold, you'll be there guarding them.

Be Safe,

Steve Childs, Fire Chief
Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Dept.
P.O. Box 53
Glen Haven, CO 80532

Note:  In follow-up conversation with Chief Childs, it is apparent that the loss of Lt. Martin is not a LODD, and would not be a qualifying event under the Hometown Heroes Survivors Benefits Act.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Lt. Greg Martin, and Chief Childs and the members of the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department.

Paul
